"I first visited the Comedy Underground when I was 13 years old,” the local comedian says. “It's the club where I performed my first open mic. Ever since the day I stepped into that windowless basement, I have dreamt of headlining that stage."

30 years later that dream is about to come true.

On June 7th-10th, Sheen will be headlining the legendary Seattle comedy club and is starting a Kickstarter campaign to record the event.

“My plan is to create a unique package, both artistically and audibly, by utilizing the talents of hard rock producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Isis, Minus the Bear) and cartoonist Mark Allender,” says Sheen. “I'm hoping to craft a project that not only captures my live act, but also my fondness for loud music, art and the spectacle of a big production.”

A lifelong heavy metal fan, Sheen had Allender design the cover as an homage to late rocker Ronnie James Dio’s classic album Holy Diver. In his typical self-depreciating style, Sheen says his album will be called “Holy Drivel”.

Sheen is pulling no punches with his Kickstarter campaign, even enlisting his mother to ask for donations on his behalf via a hilarious and, apparently, drunken video.

“Please contribute to this,” Barbara Sheen pleads. “He’s all I’ve got!”

Tyler and I talked about a lot of things before he mentioned he was concerned about his relationship. He'd been away from home for weeks and his girl friend was upset after learning an old flame of his came to one of his performances.

My advise was that he should invite her to fly out from Boston for the weekend.

"But I can't afford it," he complained.

"Don't worry," I advised, "It's probably too short of notice for her but she'll appreciate the thought."

So he did and she couldn't and things were smoothed over. I felt like Dr. Phil that weekend.

I’d been hearing about Starz TV and its “Boss” and “Spactacus” shows so I decided to sign up after seeing a cool ad for a new series set in 1958 Miami, “Magic City”.

Imagine my surprise upon seeing “Magic City” concerns a middle-aged guy, “Ike,” who runs a swanky hotel along with his two sons because, hey, I’m a middle-aged guy who runs a comedy club and sports bar with his two sons. Perhaps the show could have been called “Emerald City” and been about us.

After all, Ike’s Miramar Hotel is in trouble because of a couple hurricanes while the Comedy Underground and Swannies are still recovering from the snow we had in January. Of course, there would be some significant differences:

Ike has a beautiful second wife who lives with him at the hotel but takes no interest in its operation and even gets upset when he has to break a date to meet with a potential financial savior. I have a second wife my own age who lives 800 miles away but remembers every questionable thing I’ve ever done and seldom fails to comment on what’s wrong with the way I run our place.

Lucky for Ike his ex-mother in law is still favorable disposed to him, perhaps in more ways than one, despite them not having had any contact for six years. Come to think of it, my ex-mother in law might have been favorably disposed to me, too, in more ways than one. Hmm.

Ike is willing to seek the help of a very menacing mobster when he experiences union problems that could provoke Sinatra to cancel his New Year’s Eve show at the hotel. I have no one to turn to about our similar problem with aggressive pan handling in front of our place but it’s such a pain that if I knew a menacing mobster I might just give him a call.

By the way, the best line in the first three episodes of “Magic City” was when Sinatra’s manager tells Ike, “If Frank sees one empty seat; he walks.” Talk about ego. I’m glad Rebecca Corry never came up with that one when she used to perform here (although my manager and assistant manager did say they’d walk if I ever booked her again).

One of Ike’s sons successfully hits on every woman who crosses his path including the menacing mobster’s new bride although he seemingly draws a line when he sees his step mom sunbathing in the nude. The other son remains true blue to his single love. That would have described my boys a while back but at the moment they’re both being monogamous, thank God.

The most striking thing about Ike’s relationship with his kids is that they never hit him up for money. Apparently they don’t have cell phones that are about to be turned off. The playboy can even walk away from crashing a girl friend’s car into a pond with complete impunity. Try that in Washington and see what happens.

These kids also always back their dad’s play even when it comes to dealing with situations in which he has no experience, like negotiating with unions. One of mine tells me to stay out of the kitchen because I never worked as a line cook.

I’ve read several reviews of “Magic City” and they generally seem to love the period cars, clothes, décor and manners but find the plot superficial and the nudity superfluous. I remain transfixed though, wanting to shout at Ike, “Why are you putting up with all this shit? What are you getting out of it?”

It’s at times like that I realize the show and my life have a lot more in common than at first viewing.

Saleem, 2010 winner of the prestigious Boston Comedy Festival, is coming to the Comedy Underground to record a CD with Uproar January 26-28, 2012.

Saleem is not only a great Comedian... he is also a great Contrarian: "Even if you agree with me about something, it's not for the same reasons." But what is not up for debate are the audience reactions. His instant likeability and dynamic presence belie his edgy and refreshingly original material. He speaks to every kind of audience, but never compromises his distinctive comedic "voice" -- which is why he is a hot commodity in clubs, colleges, cruises, theatres and corporate events worldwide.

His credits already include appearances on "The Tonight Show", "Lopez Tonight," NBC's "Last Comic Standing", FOX's "Best Damn Sport Show...Period" and BET's "Comic View." He has toured with music greats "The Temptations", "Boys II Men" and Vanessa Williams as well as with comedy legends such as George Carlin, Joan Rivers, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Kathleen Madigan and Gary Shandling.

An actor in his own right, you may have seen Saleem on ABC's "Sons & Daughters", Universal's "Blind Date" or in a host of commercials including "Foot Locker" and "Pringles". Or maybe you've heard him hosting on Sirius Satellite Radio's "Blue Collar" channel. Saleem also wrote and directed York Entertainment's parody of "The Terror", and he tours the Middle East for several charity organizations.

Uproar continues to turn to Comedy Underground as their go-to club for comedy recordings. Recent comics include Andrew Norelli, Robert Duchaine and more on the way.
Considering the quality of the competition he faced, that's pretty amazing.

Mike Baldwin drove out from Missouri to participate in the comedy competition with an initial thought of earning enough prize money to pay for his food, a cheap motel and enough gas to get back home. When all was said and done, he was holding a check for $5,000, the biggest payday of his career and a return plane ticket for a Victory Engagement at the Comedy Underground, Dec. 9-11, Baldwin tells his audiences, "I'm dumb but not that dumb. I just like to act that way to mess with my friends" and, boy, does he ever. With impeccable timing, a likable stage presence and unique voice, he truly is a major new discovery on the scene.

Mike Baldwin earned himself a check for $5000. In addition, he will be offered a $1000.00 advance towards a recording contract with Uproar Entertainment.

If you saw Mike during the comedy competition, come see him do his complete set. If you didn't see him, come now and treat yourself to an early Christmas present.

In perhaps the most dramatic finish of a round in the history of the Seattle International Comedy Competition, Pacific Northwest comic Rodney Sherwood ended a six-year hiatus from the stage in grand style by placing first at the last show in the semi-finals of the 32nd Annual Seattle International Comedy Competition to nab a spot in the finals occurring this week.

Sherwood will now vie against Mike Baldwin from Kansas City, Mrs. Hughes from Pismo Beach, CA, Patrick Keane from L.A. and Rick Kunkler from Seattle for a $5,000 first prize, a recording contract and glory amongst their peers. The finals get underway Tuesday night at a private show in the Washington Athletic Club.

Then it will be on to Wednesday night at the Vashon Theatre, Friday at Mt. Baker Theatre in Bellingham and Saturday at the Admiral Theatre in Bremerton before the winner is announced at the Comedy Underground in Seattle on Sunday. Tickets are still available to all these remaining shows and can be purchased at http://www.seattlecomedycompetition.com

Early in the semi-finals, which began in Seattle before appearing to Edmonds, Olympia, Skagit, Kelso and Tacoma, it became apparent there was only one spot in the finals still up for grabs. For the remainder of the week, Sherwood and Sam Demaris from Houston eyed each other from the stage wings before going out and giving their all to see which one of them would move on.

In front of a sold-out crowd at Theatre on the Square in Tacoma on Sunday, Demaris went up second and rocked the house with a routine that included the chronicling of the adventures of a black man in Idaho and Montana. "I've got it," he whispered as the evening progressed.

But later in the show, Sherwood had a strong set as well. Dressed in a suit and wearing thick glasses, with his wife watching from the audience, he offered up an amazingly energetic performance with the catch phrase, "Come on!" His set included the chronicling of the adventures of a Puget Sound man journeying into eastern Washington.

Still, when it was announced that Demaris had placed fourth for the night and that newcomer Xung Lam from Seattle had surprisingly come in third, emcee Jim Short glanced over and saw a visibly crestfallen Sherwood.

It was certainly understandable. The names Baldwin and Hughes had yet to be announced and they had been coming in one-two pretty much all week long. Then, "placing second tonight, Mike Baldwin." It was the only time all week Baldwin had not taken first. Could it be?

Short relished the moment before bringing Sherwood onstage. It was a Hollywood ending but it's not over yet. Backstage, with tears in his eyes, Demaris accepted a well-paying gig at a California casino from producer Jon Fox as a consolation prize.

Uproar CD has chosen the Comedy Underground as it's "go to" club for recording what is becoming an array of top Hollywood comedians.

It started in January with Andrew Norelli, fresh from an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel", who was also a finalist in the Boston Comedy Festival.

Now, Robert Duchaine will be coming in this week to memorialize his iconoclastic point of view.

Robert Duchaine has been described as a surly misanthrope who has been kicked out of every organization he was ever forced to join, from the Cub Scouts to the U.S. Army, and fired from every job he ever finagled. He's an established national touring headliner who performs regularly in Las Vegas show rooms, colleges, comedy clubs and deeply involved in avant-garde theater and independent film. The Oregonian describes his shows "...like having a one-sided conversation with your funniest friend."

Robert will be recording at the Comedy Underground in Seattle November 17-19, 2011.

Sadiki Fuller is scheduled to do the same thing in March, 2012.

As Bogie said to Claude Rains in "Casablanca", "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Will Ferrell, who refined his impersonation of President George W. Bush on "Saturday Night Live" and later took his presidential act to Broadway, was awarded the nation's top humor prize Sunday night.

The TV star went on to make movies and co-found the popular website FunnyorDie.com in a career that won the 44-year-old the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

It was the Bush impression, though, that might have made the Washington crowd laugh — and cringe — the hardest Sunday.

"Washington is not a city much known for its comedy — at least not the intentional kind," said PBS news anchor Gwen Ifill, who mentored Ferrell on his journalistic skills for the movie "Anchorman."

She introduced a clip of Ferrell playing Bush in "You're Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush" on Broadway. Dressed in a flight suit under a banner that read "Mission Accomplished" in a mock Oval Office he explained how Morocco had sent a special unit of 2,000 trained monkeys to fight terrorism "and make children laugh."

With that kind of comedy, Ferrell had accomplished something amazing, Ifill said.

"He got Democrats to pay and see and applaud George W. Bush," she said.

Conan O'Brien, Jack Black, Matthew Broderick, Ben Stiller and Billie Joe Armstrong from the rock band Green Day performed Sunday in Ferrell's honor, joined by Molly Shannon, Tim Meadows and Andy Samberg from Ferrell's "SNL" days.

The show was taped for broadcast Oct. 31 on PBS stations nationwide.

Black opened the show with a song-and-dance routine for his friend and tried to lead the crowd in chanting "Will, Will, Will, will rock you."

"Will Ferrell, did you notice how I changed it from `We Will Rock You?" he said.

"It's about time he got some official Washington, D.C., props," Black said, noting that Ferrell had "reigned supreme" on "SNL" for seven years. "He's crazy funny. He makes you laugh so hard you cry and pee simultaneously."

O'Brien saluted Ferrell for giving so much of himself to his comedy. He said Ferrell had his sides physically softened and his "buttocks lowered with magnets" to prepare his body for spandex routines and at times streaking naked.

"Will magnifies and celebrates his flaws, just to entertain us," O'Brien said.

O'Brien also thanked Ferrell for being his first guest and his last guest when he was host of NBC's "Tonight Show."

"It's a rare friend who's going to stick with you for five-and-a-half months," he said.

Shannon, who met Ferrell while she was a waitress in Los Angeles, said that contrary to his TV persona, Ferrell is very serious and sweet to work with. As for the award, she joked "Will's agents and manager clearly bought this for him."

Some of Ferrell's famous sketches from "SNL" were played on the big screen, including his "Cow Bell" routine and "Craig the Spartan Cheerleader."

When he was finally awarded the prize, a bronze bust of Twain, Ferrell promptly dropped it on stage and tried to pick up the broken pieces. He joked that he had turned the prize down 13 times before but decided to accept this time because of the prize money (there isn't any) and to be watched on PBS "by hundreds of people across this country."

He thanked the Kennedy Center as "one of the few places that uphold comedy as what it truly is, an art form."

Ferrell is the son of a teacher and Roy Lee Ferrell, a guitarist for the Righteous Brothers. He grew up in Irvine, Calif., went to college at the University of Southern California and got his start in comedy with the Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings.

That's where he was discovered by "SNL."

Ferrell went on to make some outlandish movies including "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,""Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Old School." He has also tried his hand at drama, including this year's independent film "Everything Must Go." One of his upcoming projects is a Spanish-language comedy, "Casa de Mi Padre."

Ferrell told The Associated Press he has tried different avenues as movie studio budgets tightened. He opted for projects with smaller budgets but more creative freedom.

Longtime collaborator Adam McKay and Ferrell also took their comedy to the Internet with the 2007 creation of the popular video website FunnyorDie.com. Since then, it has drawn an audience of millions for its original Web programming.

McKay, a former head writer on "SNL," said it was Ferrell's "Cow Bell" sketch that has always made him laugh the hardest.

Before the show, Ferrell said playing the Bush character is one of his favorite memories for its political laughs, especially when he took the character to Broadway.

"We hit it at the perfect time when people wanted some sort of comedy after the eight years we just went through," he said.

Thirteen other people have won the Mark Twain Prize since 1998, including Tina Fey, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg. It recognizes people who have followed the tradition of Samuel Clemens, the writer known as Mark Twain who used social commentary and satire to have an impact on society.

Photo Finish Prompts Emotional Acceptance Speech

Sean Kent is the winner of the 36th Annual San Francisco Comedy Competition.

Sean Kent from Austin let it all hang out after the announcement that he had fulfilled his Joe Namath-like guarantee to win the 36th Annual San Francisco Stand-Up Comedy Competition. With tears pouring down, the 37-year-old road veteran talked of having watched a early version of the fabled contest on TV at the age of 12 and vowing he would someday join its list of champions. He also disclosed his battle with cancer that still threatens to cut his life short, perhaps instilling in him an urgency not seen in comedy since the likes of Bill HIcks.

As fascinating as were his remarks, his fellow competitors grew restless standing next to him on stage. Runner-up Alex Koll fetched a broom and began cleaning the stage and when that didn't bring the festivities to a close, he came back with an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Producer Jon Fox, although enjoying the litany of accolades and insults coming his way from the stage, felt obliged to give Kent a flashing light indicating he had gone overtime. All in all, it was a memorable ending to a memorable year that also saw two very talented young contestants, Grant Cotter and Stroy Moyd, fail to advance out of the preliminary rounds only due to time point violations.

And so it shall now be recorded:

1. Sean Kent, Austin
2. Alex Koll, San Francisco
3. Sal Calanni, San Francisco
4. John Hastings, Toronto
5. AJ Finney, Kansas City

Having to throw out enough memorabilia to start a comedy museum was a bit traumatic but compensated for by considerable savings on rent and utilities. The problem is I now find I can’t get anything done at home. I blame it all on “Law and Order.”
I’ve been a loyal viewer since the show debuted. I remember Michael Moriarty walking out of the role as Assistant District Attorney Ben Stone in a huff about artistic standards. That was in 1994.
I thought I’d seen most of the episodes but not on your life.
Nowadays, my wife, Anne, gets up early and has coffee ready by 7 a.m. for our initial morning viewing. After I stagger out of bed and go to the car to retrieve her daily pack of Camels, I join her on the couch.
In my mind, I’m thinking, “I’ve probably already seen what’s going to come on and if I have I’ll get an early start on making booking inquiries or answering my emails.”
The chances of that happening are about one in ten. Just how many episodes of this show have been made? We tried to do the math and it comes out to around 500 but something tells me the figure might be much higher.
And the thing of it is, the reruns continue all day long. At the top of every hour, I think, “This is going to be when I’m able to start work.” I wish.
My favorite character, of course, is Detective John Munch played by Richard Belzer what with he being a former comedian and all. I like his conspiracy theories, too.
Anne especially likes Detective Lennie Briscoe, played by the late Jerry Orbach who she refers to as “hound dog.” She was really quite upset when he passed away.
Anne says I remind her of Detective Robert Goren played by Vincent D’Onofrio. That rates as one of her typical backhanded compliments because he’s going downhill fast, appearance-wise.
I do like him more than those actors on the show who were previously on “Oz”. I just keep thinking of what diabolical bastards Christopher Meloni and J.K. Simmons used to be when they were in prison. I can’t accept them as “public servants” (words that George Carlin could have had a field day with).
As for Chris Noth, he was once quite appealing as Detective Mike Logan. But when he later portrayed the character, “Big,” being in love with that bow-legged Sara Jessica Parker on “Sex in the City,” I couldn’t take him anymore. And don’t get me started on Mariska Hargitay as Detective Oliva Benson. She reminds me of the girl who ran crying out of the high school gym when I rubbed my boner against her during a slow dance at the junior prom.
To me, Jeff Goldbaum’s character, Detective Zach Nichols, is the most interesting. I love the way he psycho analyzes suspects in between stepping outside to brilliantly play “Go” in Central Park, much to the amazement of New York’s Asian community.
“Let’s see,” he’ll say, “The mother abandoned the family so the child became daddy’s little girl. She joined him on hunting trips and learned how to dress out the deer he shot. That’s why she’s now stalking, killing and mutilating prostitutes with the help of her love slave boy friend no matter the alibi his buddies down at the fire station are giving him.”
Case solved and fuck you NRA and public employee unions to boot! With viewpoints like that, no wonder he had to leave the show.
Sitting there, enraptured but hating myself for procrastinating, I pray that an odd episode of “CSI’ or “NCIS” will air just so I can detach and get away. I’m up and running the moment David Caruso appears standing in his usual sideways pose saying something lame like, “If I find out you did this, I’m going to get you.”
The only thing worst than that are the comediennes they put on Comedy Central.

Comedian and shrill-voiced human Gilbert Gottfried was fired on Monday from his job as the voice of the Aflac duck, after tweeting jokes about the Japanese disaster.

As of Monday night, the offending tweets were taken off of Gottfried's Twitter feed, but included, "Japan called me. They said 'maybe those jokes are a hit in the U.S., but over here, they're all sinking.'" And: "I was talking to my Japanese real estate agent. I said 'is there a school in this area.' She said 'not now, but just wait.'"

Aflac was not happy. "Gilbert's recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac," said Aflac Senior Vice President Michael Zunda in a statement. Given that the extent of his character was shouting out the word "Aflac" over and over, we're pretty sure the insurance company will carry on.

I just wonder how Aflac went 11 years without listening to Gilbert's act. His jokes are no more offensive than when Aflac hired him to do the worst duck call impression I can imagine.
